KOTA BARU: Kelantan has geared up for the next phase of implementing hudud law with a decision to enforce the law through the syariah court system.
Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said the state government was drawing up the Syariah Criminal Law Enactment (II) 1993 (Hudud Law).
“When ready, hudud law can be used as a guideline for the (syariah court) judges and they know what to do.
“We will use our political will to have an enactment to be used by the courts if they wish.
“If such cases crop up, the judges could brief the prosecution and defence lawyers on the procedure.
“When this is done, I will not have friction with Karpal Singh,” he said, referring to DAP national chairman who has been the most vocal leader in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition in criticising the intention to implement hudud law.
Nik Aziz said it would be entirely up to the syariah judges to decide on each case based on hudud and, if there was a dispute, offenders could always hire a counsel for his defence.
He could not see any problem to it, he added.
Nik Aziz, who is PAS spiritual adviser, was speaking to reporters after launching the state-level Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen Day here yesterday.
“I do not want to argue with Karpal because what the Kelantan Government is doing is to include the enactment in the syariah list of punishments,” he said, adding that existing criminal laws were more cruel than hudud.
