SHAH ALAM, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition are prepared to restore the immunity of the Malay rulers based on the spirit of the constitutional monarchy in the country, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said today.

She said this was in line with the commitment of the PKR towards the position of the Malay rulers as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

This was not in response to the call by the Regent of Negeri Sembilan Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja'afar for restoration of the full immunity of the Malay rulers, she told reporters after opening the PKR annual national congress, here.

Tunku Naquiyuddin had on Wednesday called for restoration of the full immunity of the Malay rulers to help them be effective "guardians of the constitution".

Dr Wan Azizah said she had stated the party's stand to dismiss allegations that the PKR was attempting to erode the sovereignty of the rulers, the position of Bahasa Melayu as the national language and the status of Islam in the country.

Earlier, in her address opening the congress, Dr Wan Azizah said the PR component parties had signed a joint communique which clarified the commitment of the coalition towards the position of the Malay rulers, the special privileges of the Malays and the status of Bahasa Malaysia and Islam, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

"Our top leadership also reiterates our joint commitment to champion the fundamental rights of all Malaysians," she said.

Meanwhile, Dr Wan Azizah said PKR had yet to discuss which of the PR parties should field a candidate for the upcoming parliamentary by-election in Kuala Terengganu.

The seat has fallen vacant following the death yesterday of Datuk Razali Ismail, 59, who was deputy education minister, after he collapsed while playing badminton at the Aminuddin Baki Institute in Genting Highlands.
