KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will hold more talks with PAS on issues related to Islam,
party information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib said.
He said all Muslims should welcome such talks and there should be no compromise.
“The talks have been very good so far. There should be more understanding among
us on the fundamental issues regarding religion.
“That is something we cannot compromise on,” he told reporters after the Umno
supreme council meeting here yesterday.
Muhammad said Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi explained to the
council members what was discussed in the three previous meetings with PAS.
“The discussions centred on religion. Muslims should not squabble on this point.
“We can have differences on administrative matters, for example, but when it
comes to religion, there should be understanding among leaders in Umno and PAS,”
he added.
On the Umno leadership transition plan, Muhammad said party members were free to
give their views on the matter.
“We cannot stop the differences in views. The Prime Minister had already
informed the leaders and his views were accepted. There’s no issue in that,” he
added.
Muhammad said the meeting did not discuss the Batu Puteh issue and the statement
by US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice on the sodomy charge against Datuk Seri
Anwar Ibrahim.
