KUALA LUMPUR: In what is said to be the first case of its sort in the country, three women were fined between RM20,000 and RM50,000 for failing to appear before the Securities Commission to give their oral statements to help in a probe into alleged false information.

“This is the first case of its kind where a person is prosecuted for disobeying a notice to appear before the SC for purposes of facilitating investigations.

“This shows how seriously the SC is taking its job. It must be commended,” said Sessions Court judge Jagjit Singh here yesterday.

He fined accounts executive Normah Sapar RM50,000 for failing to comply with two notices to appear before an investigating officer of the SC to give an oral statement.

The judge also fined saleswoman Chong Poh Ying RM25,000 and former accounts executive Helen Soon Shiau Yen RM20,000 for a similar offence.

Normah, 37, Chong, 39, and Soon, 37, admitted committing the offences at the SC at Persiaran Bukit Kiara here in 2009.

At that time, according to the facts, SC investigating officer Siti Azlina Abdul Rani was carrying out a probe into closed-circuit TV supplier Inix Technologies Holdings Bhd over the supply of false information to Bursa Malaysia.

DPP Geethan Ram Vincent pressed for a deterrent sentence, saying the three accused had wilfully avoided giving the SC the statements and this had delayed matters and denied the authorities from obtaining valuable facts.

Lawyer Kuldeep Kumar, pleading for leniency for the three accused, said they were remorseful of their actions and had not been aware the offence was serious.
