SHAH ALAM: Selangor State Assembly Speaker Teng Chang Khim was among those whose
statements were recorded by the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) in connection with
the arrest of a 57-year-old community leader who asked for a RM1mil bribe to
help settle a civil suit.
Teng turned up at the Selangor ACA office at about 9am and left about three
hours later.
State ACA director Ja’afar Mahad said the agency had recorded statements from
Teng and others yesterday.
“More people will be asked to assist in the investigations,” he said but
declined to elaborate.
The community leader, who is also a businessman and a well-known figure in Klang
town, was arrested on Wednesday by the ACA for asking RM1mil to help settle the
suit filed by Chinese teenager Xu Jian Huang’s family.
He is said to have asked for the money to settle the wrongful death suit against
businessman Koh Kim Teik, who together with his bodyguards were charged with and
later acquitted of Jian Huang's murder.
It is learnt that the man was picked up at a club after receiving a cheque for
RM500,000 from another man.
The community leader, who was among those instrumental in helping Jian Huang’s
father Xu Jing Lai seek justice, was taken to the magistrate's court on Thursday
and remanded until May 20.
Koh and his two bodyguards were accused of murdering Jian Huang at a bungalow in
Jalan Mengkuang, off Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, between 11pm on Sept 26, 2004
and 3.30pm the next day.
Last year, the prosecution appealed against the acquittal of the businessman.
He never attended the hearing and the Attorney-General’s Chambers is trying to
get a warrant of arrest against Koh, whose whereabouts is unknown.
Ja’afar said the agency was also looking into whether the suspect was trying to
help “settle” the appeal case in the Court of Appeal.
“We are trying to determine the purpose of the suspect asking for the money,
whether to settle the civil suit or the appeal case,” he said.
