KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has set up a task force to identify an appropriate mechanism for the implementation of the declaration of assets by judges as announced by the Chief Justice Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria.

The task force will also monitor the process in keeping with the Civil Service General Orders and Practice Directions 1993.

The MACC said this in res- ponse to Arifin's announcement at the Conference of Judges on Sun-day that superior court judges would be required to declare their assets.

MACC Inspection and Consultan-cy Division director Shaharuddin Khalid will head the task force.

Currently, there is no mechanism for implementing such a declaration, although Section 3(3) of the first Judges Code of Ethics (COE) drawn up in 1994 did call for a written declaration of assets to the Chief Justice. (It is now Section 9 of the 2009 COE.)

MACC said it was ready to assist any public or private agency in reviewing and giving advice on the existing system and procedures.

It noted that judges appointed under the Legal and Judicial Service magistrates and Sessions Court judges are bound by Regulation 10 of the General Regulations (Conduct and Discipline) 1993 to make a written declaration of their assets and that of their family to the relevant authority.

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) president Datuk Paul Low said the movement had repeatedly called for transparency and full public disclosure of assets of elected and public officials.
