KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- The younger brother of the late Tan Sri Azmi Kamaruddin said today the former Supreme Court Judge was thankful to the government for having cleared his name from the taint of the 1988 judicial crisis.

Datuk Suhaimi Kamaruddin said his brother told him three days ago that, "I'm grateful that my name has been cleared before I close my eyes and I'm want to express my thanks to those involved in clearing my name."

Azmi, 75, passed away due to old age at the Ampang Hospital, here, last night and was buried at 12.30pm today at the Dusun Tua Muslim Cemetery in Hulu Langat, his family's ancestral village.

Azmi is one of six judges who were removed during the judicial crisis in 1988.

The others were the then Lord President Tun Salleh Abas, Tan Sri George Edward Seah Kim Seng, Tan Sri Wan Hamzah Mohd Salleh, Tan Sri Eusoffe Abdolcadeer and Tan Sri Wan Suleiman Pawanteh.

On April 18 last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced that the six would be paid ex-gratia in recognition of their contribution and to regain the credibility of the judiciary.

The payments were made last year.

Suhaimi, a former deputy minister in the 1980s and former Umno Youth chief, said his brother had also expressed the hope that Chief Justice of the Federal Court Tan Sri Zaki Tun Azmi would restore the country's judiciary to its former glory.

"My brother told me that he had seen that there was already a move towards that," Suhaimi said.

Suhaimi said his brother also hoped that Zaki would emulate his (Zaki's) father, the late former Chief Justice Tun Azmi Mohamed, in upholding the country's judicial system.

"I've conveyed these words to Zaki this morning when he came to pay his last respects and he promised to honour them," said Suhaimi, who spoke on behalf of the family at Azmi's house in Jalan Ampang.

Among those who paid their last respects were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, former Deputy Prime Minister Tun Musa Hitam, former Inspector-General of Police Tun Mohamed Haniff Omar, former Chief Justice Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah and former Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abu Hassan Omar and Gua Musang Member of Parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
