KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Ibrahim Lembut has been appointed the syariah chief judge with effect from Dec 1.

Ibrahim is also the new director-general of the Syariah Justice Department.

He replaces Datuk Sheikh Ghazali Abdul Rahman, whose contract ended on Nov 30.

Ibrahim, who began his career as the Jasin district religious officer in Malacca in 1983, holds a Bachelor of Arts in Hadith from Darul Uloom University in Deoband, India.

He also holds a degree in Syariah and Islamic law from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, and a Diploma in Law and Islamic Judicial Administration from International Islamic University here.

Ibrahim has been a Syariah Court of Appeal judge since Feb 2002.
