KUALA LUMPUR: Suhakam will hold its last leg of consultations with indigenous people and other stakeholders over the national inquiry into the Land Rights of Indigenous Peoples next month.
Commissioner Jannie Lasimbang said the consultations would be held in Sarawak from Sept 17 to Sept 30 starting in Kuching and followed by Serian, Betong, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang.
“We urge people to come forward with evidence and to inform other communities as well,” she said yesterday.
Jannie said they should bring along their land application documents, correspondence with the land office as well as historical documents, maps or photographs which show their ownership of the land.
Jannie said the public hearing in Sarawak would be held early next year and the inquiry would be completed by the middle of 2012.
The inquiry was held in Sabah in June and in peninsular Malaysia last month.
More than 2,000 indigenous people turned up for the consultations in Sabah and more than a thousand in the peninsula, said Jannie.
“Many spoke strongly and became emotional because they were frustrated their rights had not been recognised,” she said.
She added that because of this, many indigenous people could not receive government subsidies as they had no land titles.
