KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) will put more emphasis on civil and political rights over the next two years through the establishment of a new committee.

Suhakam, in a statement, said the new committee would be established and chaired by Suhakam commissioner Datuk Dr Michael Yeoh.

The committee will hold dialogues with political parties, parliamentarians, civil society organisations and the public.

The setting up of the committee takes into account the new political realities after the March 8 general election which had re-emphasised the importance of human rights. The prime minister's decision to establish the Judicial Appointments Commission and the Malaysian Commission on Anti-Corruption are laudable, said Suhakam.
