KUALA LUMPUR: Suhakam has met the Attorney-General to discuss the abolition of the Internal Security Act (ISA) and new laws replacing it.

Chairman Tan Sri Hasmy Agam said AG Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail was “upbeat” about the discussion held at 4pm yesterday.

“This is a good start and part of an ongoing consultation with stakeholders.”

The motion to repeal the ISA is set to be tabled in Parliament in March.

Suhakam had in 2003 suggested the ISA be replaced with a new law.

“What we do not want is for old wine to be put in a new bottle,” he said yesterday.

He said the new laws should conform to universal norms as much as possible and strike a balance between national security and human rights.

Suhakam’s suggestions include seeking an order from a High Court judge if a person had to be detained more than 24 hours; and for a person to be charged or released after being detained for a maximum of 29 days.

Hasmy commended Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for taking steps to abolish the ISA instead of amending the archaic law.
