KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) will start its public inquiry into the July 9 rally here next week to determine if there had been violations of human rights and police brutality.

Suhakam vice-chairman Prof Datuk Dr Khaw Lake Tee will chair the inquiry, which will start on Oct 12.

“We are preparing to call four or five witnesses on the first day.

“Overall, 36 witnesses have been identified but not all will be called,” she said at a Suhakam press conference here yesterday.

These witnesses, she added, were those who had submitted documents and evidence to substantiate their claims.

Dr Khaw said the commission was still gathering information from the police and the Bar Council and was in the process of interviewing the witnesses.

She said the police had also agreed to give their cooperation.

Suhakam chairman Hasmy Agam said the commission has the responsibility to monitor possible human rights violations during the July 9 rally, even if it was organised by the outlawed Bersih 2.0 group.

He hoped the outcome of the inquiry and Suhakam’s report would be debated in Parliament.

Meanwhile, Suhakam commissioner Jannie Lasimbang raised the issue of a national inquiry into the land rights of indigenous people, saying that consultations on the ground had been completed and a public hearing would likely be held from January to March next year.

“We hope the indigenous people’s land rights will be protected.

“The laws must protect their rights,” she said, adding they had yet to see the proposed amendments to the Aboriginal Peoples Act.

Sabah and Sarawak, she said, have laws on native customary rights, unlike the peninsula.

Later, Hasmy also announced that Suhakam will hold its inaugural Malaysian Human Rights Awards, in conjunction with World Human Rights Day on Dec 10.

He invited nominations from the public for three categories – individual, organisation and the media.

Nominations close on Nov 1.
