SKUDAI: The National Student Representative Council will conduct a survey to obtain students' views on the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971 and forward its findings to the Government.

Council chairman Wan Ahmad Hazman Wan Daud said that university students were tired of certain parties misrepresenting their opinions.

“We will conduct a survey involving 4,000 students from 20 public higher education institutions,” he said after attending the Higher Education Institutions Student Representatives Convention 2011 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia here yesterday.

“We will forward our findings to Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who chairs the annual National Student Legislative Council meeting,” he said.

Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who closed the convention, said Section 15 of UUCA was not aimed at restricting students but maintaining neutrality within universities.

“Students should have their own opinions and be the intelligent alternative voice of the people,” he said.

In KOTA SAMARAHAN, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Student Representative Council (SRC) vice-president Hwong Yie Hahn said the UUCA needed to be amended to allow university students to be involved in political activities outside campus.

“The Government should amend Section 15 of UUCA to restrict politics in the classroom, but give a chance for students to be in politics off campus,” he said yesterday.

Hwang said the majority of university students were eligible to vote and should be given an opportunity to make their voices heard.

“Holistic development is essential to produce quality graduates,” he said.

Media reports yesterday quoted two SRC presidents from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) as being against the amendment.

USM SRC president Muhammad Idzuan Jamaluddin and UPM SRC president Iqbal Ismat Nordin said the amendment would affect learning in campus.
