PETALING JAYA: There is still room for discussion on the Employment Act amendments, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam told the MTUC.

Dr Subramaniam, who was saddened by the MTUC’s planned nationwide picket to protest the amendments which were passed by the Dewan Rakyat last week, said the congress had misconstrued the issue.

“I will still discuss with the MTUC. In fact, before I tabled the amendments, I met with MTUC officials in the morning to explain the issue. Those who came understood my explanation,” Dr Subramaniam told a press conference after launching the Malaysian Employers Federation National Conference 2011 yesterday.

He said the MTUC had made it seem as if the amendments were meant to endorse outsourcing of jobs, which in turn would reduce permanent jobs.

“We want contractors to register with the ministry so that it will be easy for us to monitor and control them, and give priority to workers’ protection,” said Dr Subramaniam.

“The issue of outsourcing contracts is a different matter from the amendments we have tabled. We will address this issue together with employers and employees.”

The minister stressed that the amendments were made after many years of lobbying by the National Union of Plantation Workers, following a host of cases where plantation workers were abused by their employers.

“We are doing this for the protection of workers and it is sad that the umbrella union is the one opposing it.”

MTUC secretary-general Abdul Halim Mansor had earlier said its members would picket nationwide on Nov 3 to protest the amendments.

He said MTUC members would be wearing black armbands during the protest, which was scheduled to take place from 5pm to 6.30pm
