GEORGE TOWN: DAP is overly suspicious about the Umno-PAS dialogues on Islamic
and Malay issues, says Umno supreme council member Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad.
Shahrir, who said Umno had not abandoned its multiracial stance, called on the
DAP yesterday to stop overreacting over the talks between Prime Minister Datuk
Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa.
“The meeting was more on Islamic and Malay issues. Maybe we should have brought
along a MCA representative,” he quipped.
Shahrir said Umno would never abandon its multiracial stance as it had proven to
be effective in uniting people of all races in Malaysia.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who is also Penang Chief Minister, had said
that he was interested to know what was discussed during the dialogues.
Abdullah had said on Sunday that he met ”very high level” PAS leaders three
times and their talks had advanced to another stage.
On another matter, Shahrir said he was not vying for the vice-president’s post
in Umno polls this December.
