KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin was arrested Friday afternoon under the Internal Security Act.

Three Malaysian newspapers - Sin Chew Daily, The Sun and Suara Keadilan - were also issued show cause letters by the Home Ministry.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar told The Star Raja Petra was detained under Section 73 (1) of the ISA as he was deemed a threat to security, peace and public order.

He said that under Section 73 (1) Raja Petra would be detained for 60 days.

“The police will do an assessment during this period and if they feel he should be held more than 60 days, the police will then refer to me,” he said.

Syed Hamid also confirmed that Sin Chew Daily, The Sun and Suara Keadilan were issued show cause letters.

"They have been given a week to reply," he added.

Raja Petra's wife Marina Lee Abdullah said the blogger was arrested at 1.10pm at their home in Sg Buloh by a team of 10 police officers.

She told The Star that Raja Petra was taken away from their house by the police about 1.50pm.

"But I don't know where they are taking him," she added.

She said that the police officers also took some 15 CDs on ceramahs held by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from the house.

PKR Information Chief Tian Chua told The Star before leaving for Taiwan that he was informed of Raja Petra’s arrest by party colleagues.

“RPK’s daughter sent a SMS to say that her father was arrested about 1.10pm (Friday),” he said when contacted before he boarded China Airlines flight CI 0656, which was scheduled to depart KLIA at 2.20pm Friday.

Raja Petra’s arrest comes a day after the Cabinet ordered the Multimedia and Communications Commission (MCMC) to reinstate access to all blocked websites, including the controversial Malaysia Today.

Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said on Thursday the order was made because there were other “harsher” laws in the country, under which authorities could take action against the owners of blogs and websites, instead of blocking it.

“The Cabinet has asked the ministry to direct MCMC to reinstate access to any blocked website with immediate effect.

“At the same time, it is asking MCMC to closely cooperate with the police, the Attorney-General’s Office and the Home Minister to monitor any website or blog to ensure that this does not contain seditious, racist or religiously insensitive remarks.

“Instead of blocking access to offensive websites, the Cabinet wants authorities to investigate and act quickly against the owners of these sites,” he said in Putrajaya.

WHAT WILL IT BE? QUE SERA-SERA?
written by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng, Friday, September 12 2008 02:58 pm

Shades of Operation Lalang? Or a prelude to a declaration of Emergency rule?

Although it is far too early to tell, such an eventuality cannot be ruled out. Whatever happens, there are implications for foreign investment in our country.

So far, three newspapers, Sin Chew, The Sun and Parti Keadilan newspapers, have been asked to show cuase for their political coverage.

How will Malaysians take this? Que sera-sera? Or ...

The Coat and the Goat
written by Tan Peek Guat, Friday, September 12 2008 03:39 pm

Who should be surprised if a goat should wear a coat???????

As for Raja Petra, he and his family must have expected it a long time ago, but with the belief that they could justifiably 'explain'. If for someone not a 'Raja', or 'Raja Petra', it would have happened to him long ago. This makes him more 'fortunate' than the rest, although certainly unfortunate with the severity of ISA.

As for Sin Chew, it is indeed a surprise - that an honest reporting of a real happening ought to be so reprimanded with a 'show cause' letter. Are we suppressing news reporting of the truth?

Where are our consumers' associations - to demand fair publications of the daily news for consumers' "consumption"? We want the truth and nothing but the truth, even though truth may hurt. If we do not insist upon the truth, then we would be submerged in sin and would be drowned with all the lies so bravely and boldly spread by liers who have no conscience at all.

To ISA or not to ISA?
written by Lim Yeeu Ren, Friday, September 12 2008 05:02 pm

Whilst Raja Petra has been detained under the ISA for hurting not the public but a few individuals, Ahmad Ismail who has offended thousands of people is having a gala good time being a free man and showing no remorse. He was merely suspended.

Bravo!!! Detain Ahmad Ismail under the ISA!!!!! Suspension is INADEQUATE!!!!!!

TOO MUCH OF IAN FLEMING?
written by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng, Friday, September 12 2008 06:33 pm

My dear Yeeu Ren

Here is a quote from MalaysianInsider. http://m.themalaysianinsider.c...of-critics

"Anwar's return to Parliament with a bigger majority and continuing psychological war to oust him together with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's call to him to quit before June 2010 has also pushed Abdullah to act strongly against critics whether in cyberspace or in print.

"But he also has to appease the Umno ground unhappy with Ahmad's punishment. Hence, the show-cause letter to Sin Chew which first reported the Bukit Bendara Umno leader"s campaign speech that riled up non-Malays.

"Unsurprisingly, no action has been taken against Umno newspaper Utusan Malaysia for its shrill reporting tone and an item that a Pakatan Rakyat executive councillor in Selangor was behind attempts to stop the azan prayer call in mosques ostensibly because its noisy."

See, some people operate like James Bond, with a licence to kill, so to speak, because they are on HMS (Her Majesty's Service.

Let us wait and see whether the law will be applied in an even-handed manner or not.

(Am I reading too much of Ian Fleming?)

"Are we suppressing news reporting of the truth?"
written by Joey Ngu Yi Hui, Saturday, September 13 2008 12:39 am

"Are we suppressing news reporting of the truth?"

Well, let's say the early morning after March 8th, I frantically checked through all Malaysian channels and none was reporting about the election result ... and I got to know all about it from Singapore latest news reports, completed with comments by our fellow Malaysians ...

Hhmmm ...
