TAPAH: The government has allocated RM101.35mil for the development of economic activities, education as well as basic amenities for the Orang Asli community in Perak for 2012.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the connection of rural electricity supply worth RM70mil has been approved and would provide electricity to 39 Orang Asli villages.

He said the initial phase will benefit some 7,000 members of the Orang Asli community and is expected to be completed by mid-2012.

As for water supply, Shafie said RM20mil will be used to upgrade 30 villages while at the same time, provide them with clean and treated water that would benefit 6,000 members of the Orang Asli community.

He said RM3.5mil has been allocated for the Housing Assistance Programme which involves the restoration of dilapidated houses and the construction of 120 new housing units.

The government’s efforts in bringing basic amenities like electricity as well as clean and treated water supply in addition to housing aid for the rural community is an initiative under the GTP’s Rural Basic Infrastructure NKRA.
