KUALA LUMPUR: The shocking revelations in the Auditor-General's Report 2010 has proven to the sceptics of the department's transparency and accountability in reporting on the financial management in the country.

Asli Centre of Public Policy Studies chairman Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam said the government should also be given credit for enabling the A-G to exercise his independence and integrity in tabling the report in Parliament.

He urged for greater cooperation between Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the department to step up any flagging issues in the fight against corruption.

The overall report, he said, was badly marred by the A-G's highlight on nine ministries which had overspent by RM3.73 billion of its operational allocation.

"This is sheer financial discipline for which the officers and staff concerned, must be held accountable."

Ramon also questioned the 11 government-linked companies which had gotten away with not paying dividends to the government for several years despite making profits for three consecutive years.

"Those concerned might have been sacked if they were in the private sector. It is hoped that the A-G will insist that the dividends be paid back to the government immediately."

He said the public needed to be more vigilant and ensure that the report would be debated thoroughly by their members of parliament.

"The public can now have a better basis of the report and can express their displeasure and disapproval on anyone or any matter."
