JOHOR BARU: Malaysia is confident of winning the Pulau Batu Puteh dispute, said
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
He said the legal team representing the country had managed to present a case
that should result in victory.
Dr Rais, however, cautioned that it was important to await the decision made by
the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague so that Malaysia did not
make a stake to the island prematurely.
“No one can actually predict the outcome of a case, what more a case of this
nature,” he said, but added that he felt Malaysia had a very good case.
Dr Rais said on a recent visit to Singapore, both parties had agreed to submit
to the jurisdiction of the ICJ.
“Both parties have agreed not to make extraneous statements so as not to cloud
the pure judgmental value of the case,” he said.
Dr Rais also briefed the Sultan of Johor and state leaders yesterday about the
trial and the upcoming verdict to be delivered by the ICJ on May 23.
Asked about possible changes if the ICJ decided in favour of Singapore, Rais
said that should that happen, the country’s maritime boundaries might shift.
