Public inquiry on Bandar Mahkota Cheras incident begins today |

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- The public inquiry into
allegations of excessive use of force by law enforcement personnel during the
May 27 incident at Persiaran Bandar Mahkota Cheras 1 began at the Human Rights
Commission (Suhakam) headquarters here Wednesday.
The inquiry chaired by Suhakam Commissionner Datin Paduka Zaitoon Othman and
assisted by commissioners Datuk Dr Chiam Heng Keng and Datuk Khalid Ibrahim will
call 22 witnesses, including victims, doctors, reporters and police officers, at
the two-day hearing.
Zaitoon, in her opening remarks, said the proceedings was to enquire whether or
not any law enforcement personnel, in performing their duty to maintain law and
order, had used excessive force during the incident, and, if there was excessive
use of force and violation of human rights of any persons or persons, who were
responsible for such violation.
She said the panel would recommend actions to be taken against those responsible
for the violation of human rights of such person or persons.
The first witness was mechanic Chang Jiun Haur, 21, who was injured during the
incident.
Chang, who was driving his two friends and a younger sister from their home in
Bandar Mahkota Cheras for supper at 11.30pm that day, said he was abused by the
law enforcement personnel at the scene.
He fell unconscious after the incident and was warded at the the Kajang Hospital
for a day, he said, adding that he later had his X-ray taken at the Seremban
Hospital.
He lodged a police report at the Seremban police Ssation at 4.42pm on May 29.
On the night of May 27, some residents of Bandar Mahkota Cheras were reported to
have been beaten up by a group of men with wood, helmets and iron pipes during a
protest follwing a move by the residents to remove a barricade to an access road
into their housing area.
The inquiry will resume Thursday.
