PETALING JAYA: Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari said he has yet to receive a letter from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) informing him that his suspension has been lifted.

“I came to know about it (lifting of the suspension) from the Internet. I have yet to receive a letter,” he said yesterday.

Dr Abdul Aziz was suspended over a controversial remark against the Sultan of Selangor.

He was commenting on reports that the university had lifted his suspension with immediate effect and instructed him to return to work today.

Dr Abdul Aziz was slapped with a show cause letter on Oct 19, asking him to explain by Oct 24 why action should not be taken against him for describing the Sultan of Selangor's statement over a church raid as “unusual and inconsistent”.

The law expert's suspension triggered protests from the academic fraternity.

Dr Abdul Aziz said that it would be difficult for him to work without his computer.

“Everything is in the computer,” he added.

He said he is still not off the hook, adding that he was still under investigation.

“The police have taken away my computer today (Monday), and they still have a lot of questions to ask me,” he added.

His lawyer Dr Zulqarnain Lukman said his client was merely airing his opinion, and that his statements did not contravene Article 5 (3) of the University Disciplinary Regulations and Section 3 (2) of the Sedition Act.

IIUM suspended Dr Abdul Aziz last week for questioning remarks made by the Sultan of Selangor pertaining to the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) action against the Damansara Utama Methodist Church.

The Sultan had said that Jais did not break any law when it conducted a check on the church, but no action should be taken against the church as there was not enough evidence of proselytisation attempts.
