KUALA LUMPUR: The International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) should retract the letter of suspension it had issued to constitutional law professor Dr Abdul Aziz Bari as it did not follow procedure.
Deputy Minister of Higher Education Saifuddin Abdullah said the university did not use its discretion when it issued the letter.

"He should have been served with a show-cause letter and given the opportunity to reply as there is a provision for it," he told the New Sunday Times yesterday.

"Instead, he was given a suspension letter along with the show-cause letter. This was uncalled for as the issue does not involve allegations of a criminal nature or sexual harassment."

Saifuddin said he requested a copy of the show-cause letter and a written report from IIUM on Thursday, which he received the next day.

He added that the group of students who had demonstrated against the suspension of their lecturer should not be penalised either.

"The students were simply voicing their support for a lecturer."

Yesterday, online news portal Malaysiakini obtained Saifuddin's text message to IIUM rector Professor Datuk Dr Zaleha Kamaruddin in which he described the suspension as "detrimental".

In the text message, he said the action taken was morally and intellectually wrong as Aziz had not been found guilty.

"I hope you withdraw the suspension and not take action against the students who demonstrated against the suspension yesterday."

Last Thursday, IIUM not only suspended Aziz from his lecturing duties but also revoked his access to the campus for comments made over the Selangor sultan's recent decree on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church controversy.

He had described the decree as "unusual" and "inconsistent", stating that any royal intervention must abide by the principles of Islam.
