KUALA LUMPUR (May 8, 2008): Three police reports were lodged
against Bukit Gelugor MP and DAP chairman Karpal Singh today for allegedly
questioning the special rights and authority of the Sultan of Perak.
At about 4pm, the Parliment Back Bencher's Club (BBC) president and Bintulu MP
Datuk Tiong King Sing lodged a police report in the Brickfields police station.
Quoting a news article on Tuesday in an English daily, he claimed Karpal had
said Sultan Azlan Shah had no jurisdiction to order the reinstating or transfer
of Perak Religious Department head Datuk Jamri Suri whose services were
terminated by the new Pakatan Rakyat Perak government.
Tiong, who was accompanied by five BBC exco members, said the report was being
lodged to uphold the powers and authority of state Rulers as stipulated in the
Federal Constitution.
At about the same time in the police station, another similar report was made by
Malay non-governmental organisation, Barisan Bertindak Perpaduan Melayu. Its
chairman Osman Abu Bakar lodged the report.
An hour later in the Sentul police station, Umno secretary-general Datu Seri
Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor ,who came with a group of about 10 members, also
lodged a report against Karpal saying his comments were seditious.
"I do not know what his intentions were when he made such a statement. Is he
trying to hurt the feelings of all Malaysians or just a particular community? he
asked.
All three reports urged the government to take the issue seriously and the
police to investigate and take action against Karpal accordingly.
