KUALA LUMPUR: Police officers allegedly kicked a youth and violently shoved a girl to the ground when trying to quell the Bersih 2.0 protest.

An eyewitness told the Suhakam public inquiry into the rally that the youth was “beaten up” along Jalan Pudu after he allegedly said “something negative” about the police.

“I didn’t hear exactly what he said. But I saw the police kicking him,” said Kenneth Steven Chan, who was at the July 9 demonstration.

Chan, 39, said: “I was in Jalan Tun Sambanthan when the police shouted ‘Tangkap (Arrest them)’ three times and saw the police pushing the girl to the ground in a rough way.

“My girlfriend, who was covering the rally, tried to take a picture of the scene but the police pushed her camera and it hit her face.”

The marketing consultant said he also saw police firing water cannons in the direction of Tung Shin hospital’s outpatient treatment area.

His girlfriend Reta Lee Choi Wei, a homepage manager for msn.com, said police followed protesters into the hospital areas.

Another witness, Noorsyazwani Muharam, a member of the Bar Council monitoring team, said tear gas was fired directly at the protesters, who were generally peaceful.

The public inquiry was set up to determine if there had been violations of human rights and police brutality during the rally.
