PEKAN: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has cited four factors that had made it possible for the Government to announce the move to abolish the Internal Security Act (ISA) and review several other laws.

These were quality development achieved by the country, the people being better educated, their desire for a mature democracy, and a legal system that upheld basic human rights.

The Prime Minister stressed that his announcement on Thursday night had nothing to do with pressure mounted by anyone.

“It is a result of the stellar performance delivered by the Government.

“It is time for all to move together for the betterment of the country’s political and socio-economic (situation) and turn Malaysia into a nation that practised the best parliamentary democracy in the world,” he said in a speech at his Hari Raya open house at Sultan Abu Bakar Lake Garden here yesterday.

Also present was his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor. The event was hosted by Pekan Umno headed by Najib, who is also Pekan MP.

Najib explained that the slew of transformation programmes would ensure that Malaysia developed into a modern and progressive nation.

“But the Government will not forget the rural folk. They still face a lot of problems and must continue to be given assistance,” he said.

Among the initiatives introduced for their benefit were the Kedai 1Malaysia, Klinik 1Malaysia and controlling the price of essential goods.

Najib chided those who blew their own trumpet when they gave out RM100 annually to the people, comparing this with the RM30bil in subsidy which the Federal Government set aside annually.

“It shows that the Government has nothing but concern for the people’s well-being,” he pledged.

Najib and Rosmah later distributed gifts to 240 people who would perform the haj soon.
