KUALA LUMPUR 8 Okt. - Majlis Peguam dan 32 pertubuhan bukan kerajaan (NGO) hari
ini menggesa kerajaan supaya memandang serius kes penderaan seksual wanita kaum
Penan di Sarawak.
Presiden Majlis Peguam, Datuk S. Ambiga berkata, kes itu telah berlarutan sejak
1994 tetapi sehingga sekarang tiada sebarang tindakan diambil.
Menurutnya, pada 2000, laporan yang sama dibuat kepada Pesuruhjaya Suruhanjaya
Hak Asasi Manusia Malaysia (Suhakam) tetapi masih lagi tiada sebarang tindakan
diambil.
"Kerajaan perlu memandang serius dan mengambil tindakan segera kerana kes ini
melibatkan isu sensitif.
"Kaum Penan adalah golongan minoriti dan hak asasi mereka perlu dijaga. Kami
akan pastikan hak mereka dibela," katanya pada sidang akhbar di sini hari ini.
Turut hadir ialah Koordinator Pusat Prihatin Orang Asli, Colin Nicholas;
Pengarah Eksekutif Pertubuhan Pertolongan Wanita (WAO), Ivy Josiah dan Pengarah
Eksekutif Suara Rakyat Malaysia, Yap Swee Seng.
Semalam, Timbalan Ketua Menteri Sarawak, Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam
meminta pelbagai pihak tidak membuat spekulasi mengenai dakwaan badan bukan
kerajaan (NGO) negara asing berhubung wanita kaum Penan mengalami penderaan seks
oleh pekerja balak di daerah Baram di Miri.
Menurutnya, perkara itu telah diserahkan kepada polis untuk siasatan dan biarlah
pihak berkuasa menentukan kesahihannya.
Tabung Bruno Manser (BMF), sebuah NGO berpangkalan di Switzerland sebelum itu
mendakwa pekerja balak memperkosa wanita kaum Penan sehingga mereka mengandung.
Menurut Ambiga, Majlis Peguam dan semua NGO terbabit mahu Bukit Aman segera
membuat siasatan berkenaan kes tersebut.
"Masyarakat telah hilang keyakinan terhadap polis Sarawak kerana tidak memandang
serius kes berkenaan serta mengambil masa terlalu lama untuk menyelesaikannya,"
jelasnya.
Sementara itu, Colin berkata, Bukit Aman juga harus memberi perlindungan kepada
masyarakat kaum Penan kerana mereka takut untuk memberi kenyataan dan membuat
laporan polis.
''Banyak kes tidak dapat disiasat dengan betul menyebabkan ia tidak dapat
diselesaikan kerana kekurangan bukti dan keterangan,'' ujarnya.
