NUSAJAYA, Dec 15 — An indigenous group protested outside the Johor state assembly building today over the longstanding encroachment brought by the Iskandar Malaysia project.

Some 200 Orang Seletar gathered in front of Bangunan Sultan Ismail, singing to attract the attention of their state’s assemblymen who were in session this morning, The Star newspaper reported.

They are from nine of their villages, and were looking forward to hand over a memorandum to Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

They were against the coastline development along the Johor Straits said representative Edy Salim.

The 31-year-old said the community felt neglected by the Johor administration.

He explained that the tribe lived along the Johor Straits, Sungai Pulai and Sungai Johor. Since the start of the project, he alleged developers were polluting both the rivers and sea.

They seek to stall the encroachment, for the state to regain the land passed out and to convert them to Orang Asli reserve land.

State exco members Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil and Asiah Md Ariff represented the mentri besar and met the group to discuss.

Ahmad Zahri said there will be discussions to find a way to resolve the matter.
