PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian authorities have not issued any permit to Australian mining corporation Lynas Corporation to import rare earth ores.

The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) and the Atomic Energy Licencing Board (AELB) confirmed that Lynas was not given any permit.

“Lynas is aware that it is not authorised to import rare earth ores into Malaysia without the prior approval of AELB,” the ministry said in a joint statement with the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.

The ministries issued the statement following media reports suggesting that Lynas would begin shipping the ores by the end of the month.

“Both Miti and AELB categorically state that Lynas had not been given any permission to import ores into the country. This position has not changed,” the statement said.

To import the ores, the company should first obtain the AELB Class E licence and later apply again to AELB for an import permit to be submitted to the Customs Department, the ministries said.
