SARIKEI: There is no need for police permits for Christmas carolling this year, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong.

He said more freedom is given to the people for religious activities, such as Christmas carolling, in the spirit of the recently passed Peaceful Assembly Bill 2011 by Parliament.

“No permit is needed for Christmas carolling. You don’t even need to inform the police,” Lee said at a press conference after launching the Sarawak-level Crime Awareness Team and Young Rela Squad here yesterday.

He was responding to a comment by local church leader Tony Hii that he would advise organisers of big-scale carolling or processions to give written notice to the police.

“This will allow the police to assist them in controlling the crowd and the traffic and ensure everything runs smoothly,” Hii said.

Johor police, however, want those planning to organise Christmas carols to apply for permits two weeks before their programme.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said in Muar that the organisers should also inform the police on the number of participants, the places they planned to visit and the time.

“Police will give the approval if all the procedures are followed,” he told reporters after launching the Johor western zone Rakan Cop community policing programme yesterday.
