PETALING JAYA: Non-governmental organisations are doing their part to help human trafficking victims in shelter homes until they can return to their homeland.

Suhakam commissioner James Nayagam said they were the first to develop Standard Operating Procedures for the welfare of the victims since its establishment in 2008.

“Suhakam had helped to arrange medical check-ups for the victims. In collaboration with the Sunway Rotary Club, the victims were also vaccinated,” he told The Star.

National Convention of Women’s Organisation deputy president Datuk Faridah Khalid said her organisation has conducted several programmes for victims.

“Our team would teach them English every week, conduct aerobics and dance activities, as well as cooking lessons,” she said.

Bandar Sunway Rotary Club project chairman Richard D. Ernest said the club was involved in providing Hepatitis B and HIV tests and also general medical check-ups.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said Malaysia’s 6P amnesty programme and biometric system are expected to be beefed up with more policies to curb criminal syndicates involved in such crimes.

“The Government will not allow Malaysia be used as a transit country for human trafficking,” he said.

A total of 2,320,034 legal and illegal workers have registered under the 6P programme, of which 1,303,126 were illegal while the remaining 1,016,908 were legal workers.

According to a 2011 US Human Trafficking Report, four million legal and illegal foreign workers in Malaysia were human trafficking victims, with women being the most vulnerable group as most of them end up in the sex trade.
