![]() High Court by V. Anbalagan PUTRAJAYA: A High Court is to be set up in Petaling Jaya to assist the Shah Alam High Court to clear the backlog of criminal cases in Selangor. These subordinate courts were established in the 1970s.
High Court civil and criminal matters originating from Selangor were heard in the newly carved out Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, which was earlier part of Selangor. Subsequently, a court complex was established in Shah Alam and all High Courts, civil and criminal, came under one roof. In three states in the peninsula, High Courts were located in two towns for the convenience of the public and the authorities. Selangor is the fourth state to decentralise its High Courts after Perak (High Courts in Ipoh and Taiping), Pahang (in Kuantan and Temerloh) and for Johor (in Johor Baru and Muar). A statement from the Palace of Justice yesterday said Yeoh would be temporarily placed at the High Court (criminal division) in Kuala Lumpur pending her posting to Petaling Jaya. The statement said judicial commissioners Datuk Zaleha Yusof, Datuk Nor Bee Ariffin and Datuk Umi Kalthum Abdul Majid would be posted to the High Court in Shah Alam, one of the busiest courts in the country. Judicial commissioners Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Suan and Datin Zabariah Mohd Yusof were posted to the Kuala Lumpur High Court commercial and civil divisions respectively. Other postings are Datuk Halijah Abbas (Malacca), Dr Hassan Ab Rahman (Taiping), Kamardin Hashim (Johor Baru), Yaacob Md Sam (Penang), Tarmizi Abd Rahman (Ipoh) and Akhtar Tahir (Temerloh). Rhodzariah Bujang will be posted to the High Court in Sibu and Ravinthran Paramaguru to Kuching. All are expected to report for duty on Monday. Selangor Bar criminal law practice committee chairman Salim Bashir said a High Court in Petaling Jaya would benefit the public, the legal fraternity and government agencies, including the police. "The judge will be able to clear cases which include appeals from lower courts in Petaling Jaya," he said, adding the Selangor Bar had been informed that the new court complex in Petaling Jaya to house the High Court and subordinate courts had been completed. "We believe the courts will begin operations early next year. We welcome a High Court in Petaling Jaya." Salim said the Selangor Bar had in the past, called on the judiciary to establish a High Court outside Shah Alam because Selangor was densely populated and highly commercialised.
