SEREMBAN: Every orang asli family residing in 68 villages in the state will be given shares equivalent to a two-hectare rubber or oil palm smallholding to allow them to earn a regular income.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said this was important to ensure the well-being of the orang asli and ensure that they do not encroach into forest reserves and water catchment zones to earn a living.

“Every married orang asli couple will receive the benefit. We are now in the midst of gazetting the areas concerned,” he said.

The orang asli, he said, would not be given titles to these plots but will be allowed to transfer the share to their children.

He said, based on the prevailing rubber price, they could earn at least RM1,500 a month.

The state government, he said, had launched a pilot project in Johol where some 200ha was planted with rubber saplings.

The cost for the project amounting to some RM8mil was borne by the federal and state governments.

Mohamad said the state authorities would also gazette all the orang asli villages in the area so that they would not have to lead a nomadic lifestyle.

On a separate matter, Mohamad urged leaders of Barisan Nasional component parties to be more aggressive in engaging the rakyat .

“It is pointless to see the same faces at events that you organise,” he said.

Mohamad added that the state had also received investments totalling some RM2.24bil for the industrial sector alone in the first five months of this year as against RM1.3bil for the whole of last year.

“2011 is going to be a very good year for Negri. We are projecting growth of more than 6%, which is higher than the national average.”
