TANJUNG SEPAT: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has assured the orang asli community that the Government will look into their land problems and safeguard what is theirs.

“We do care. We do not want your land to be encroached by anyone,” he said yesterday to cheers from the gathering at the Tanjung Sepat orang asli village here. The Prime Minister had earlier visited houses being built for orang asli under the third phase of the National Blue Ocean Strategy being carried out jointly by the Armed Forces and the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.

Najib told reporters later that the orang asli community would be “engaged” to address land issues before the land policy amendments are tabled.

“The Ministry (of Rural and Regional Development) will take action to protect orang asli areas. These have to be safeguarded. The ministry will engage the various state governments and the orang asli to make sure everyone is on board on the amendments,” Najib said.

Najib said the cooperation of state governments and the Department for the Development of Orang Asli is needed to survey and gazette orang asli customary land.

“This is to ensure their land and heritage are protected and defended,” he added.

The minister, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, said that the survey and gazetting had been completed in Perak, Negri Sembilan and Johor and would be carried out in Kelantan next.
