KOTA KINABALU: More lawyers are using the e-filing system to file documents at the Sabah and Sarawak courts, a High Court judge said.

Justice Datuk David Wong Dak Wah said some 10,000 documents had been submitted to the courts through the e-filing system so far.

The system is the latest component of the Integrated Court Solution (ICS), which was introduced in 2007.

“The service is also open to government agencies such as the Inland Revenue Board, the police and the Immigration Department.

“The e-filing system allowed lawyers and government agencies to file cases online at their own convenience.

“The time will come when physical documents and files will no longer have their place at the court registries,” he said at a briefing on the e-filing system at the Kota Kinabalu courts here yesterday.

Wong said the ICS, which was the brainchild of the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum, is a small step towards the creation of the electronic-based court system.

He added that the system would also include e-payment and digital signature process.

“Once implemented, the online registrations, e-payments and the digital signings of case documents will be fully realised in the courts of Sabah and Sarawak,” he added.

Wong also said that the e-filing system was integrated with the ICS and the Case Management System which allowed interactive communications between the users.

“For instance, a lawyer is able to e-file cases from his or her office for any case throughout Sabah and Sarawak. In return they can view all relevant case data uploaded by the courts in response,” he added.

The court schedule of the judges or judicial officers would be updated automatically and they would be able to check the number, type and details of cases for the day with just a mouse click, Wong said.
