Manoharan (pic) has been suspended by the DAP for six months over his statements on the national flag. The suspension takes effect im-mediately. DAP disciplinary committee chairman Tan Kok Wai said Manoharan’s comments were unbecoming of an elected representative from the party. “We feel this is the right punishment,” he said, adding that the decision was made after a four-hour meeting at the DAP headquarters yesterday. He said Manoharan could appeal against the decision within 14 days. With the suspension, Tan said the first-term assemblyman cannot participate in any party-related activities. However, his position as state assemblyman will not be affected. Manoharan said he would appeal against the decision but refused further comment. On Sept 16, Manoharan posted on his Facebook account that the Jalur Gemilang should be modified as its current design resembled that of the Barisan Nasional flag. He said it did not reflect Malaysia and went on to say that he had distributed the DAP flags instead of the national flag on Malaysia Day as he did not have the “heart” to wave the national flag. He said if Pakatan came into power, they would change the flag because the Jalur Gemilang also resembled the United States’ flag. Manoharan later posted an apology and took down his posting after drawing flak from various parties, including his own. Despite the apology, Tan said Manoharan had made a “terrible mistake” as his remarks were uncalled for. “A national flag is a symbol of the country and what he said does not reflect the true spirit of patriotism DAP is upholding,” he said. Yesterday’s meeting also saw the disciplinary committee suspend three others for six months over misconduct. DAP Bentayan assemblyman Gwee Tiong Hiang and two members from the Bakri division were suspended for improprieties in managing party funds. Tan said they had used party funds to buy a 4x4 pickup truck worth RM45,000 and registered it under their own company. “This is a serious breach of party discipline.” Set as favourite Share Email This Comments (0)
