KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has set three days from Aug 7 to hear the RM10mil defamation suit filed by lawyer Datuk Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar against Syariah lawyer Kamar Ainiah Kamaruzaman and her law firm.
Yesterday, High Court Judicial Commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera fixed the date to hear the trial and ordered the parties to file documents including witness statements and issues to be tried.
Zainul filed the defamation suit against Kamar Ainiah and her law firm through his lead counsel Datuk Mohd Haaziq Pillay on Feb 13.
In the statement of claim, Zainul, 43, said the defendants had republished defamatory words of him through a press conference held in the vicinity of the Syariah Court here on Aug 18 last year.
He said the words implied that he was untrustworthy and had bad intentions against Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Kamar Ainiah, said she had never defamed Zainul who acted for three government officers in Anwar’s qazaf (making false allegation) case.
She said she would be protected by the defence of absolute and qualified privilege over her statement, which was the basis of the lawsuit.
