KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah lawyer is seeking a judicial review to stop the Government from abolishing the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI).

Marcel Jude Joseph filed the application at the High Court Registry here yesterday for a court order to throw out the Education Ministry's decision to do away with the PPSMI, saying the decision was unlawful.

Joseph is seeking the review as a concerned citizen for education, adding that he was heavily involved in education as he is the present deputy president of the Association of Ex-Students of La Salle and Sacred Heart here.

The PPSMI policy was initiated by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and implemented in phases, beginning with Year One, Form One and Lower Six students in 2003.

It was then announced in 2009 that the Government would reverse the policy and revert to Bahasa Malaysia in national schools, and Chinese and Tamil in vernacular schools, while more emphasis would be placed on English.

The decision was met with strong objections from the public especially Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) who called for the continuation of the policy.

Following this, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said students who had started learning the subjects in the language could continue doing so until they completed their studies in Form Five.

The current batch of Year Two pupils to Form Four students will continue under the policy until they complete their secondary education.
