KOTA KINABALU: Jaringan Orang Asal SeMalaysia (JOAS) founding member Jannie Lasimbang was appointed to the United Nations Human Rights Council as one of five members of the Expert Mechanism On the Rights of Indigenous People on June 18.

Lasimbang, a Kadazan from Sabah, is a regional expert in issues that impact indigenous groups.

She is also Asian Indigenous Peoples' Pact secretary general and until recently was chairman of the UN Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples.

“JOAS feels it is an honour to have a Malaysian indigenous person appointed to such an important post,” said JOAS chairman Adrian Lasimbang.

Borneo Resource Institute of Malaysia executive director Mark Bujang said: “Jannie's appointment reflects the recognition given to her work for the struggles of indigenous peoples and demonstrates the continued importance of the issues of Malaysia's indigenous peoples in the global scene.”
