PETALING JAYA (May 9, 2008): DAP chairman Karpal Singh today said he stands by
his earlier statement on the transfer of Peral Religious Department director
Datuk Jamry Sury despite police reports lodged against him to cite him for
sedition.
Instead, he accused Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who had
instructed Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor to lodge a
report against him, of "turning what is purely a legal issue, into a political
one with racial undertones".
He also said Abdullah was trying to "divert attention from his own shaky
position as Prime Minister after calls from numerous Umno divisions that he
should step down and take the challenge by Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah to take him
on as Umno president in the coming Umno general assembly".
He said Abdullah should have sought the Attorney-General Tan Sri Ghani Patail’s
legal advice before publicly attacking him for questioning the prerogative of
Perak Sultan Raja Azlan Shah as head of the state, "when I did not do so".
He warned Abdullah and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak that
he would take legal action against them if they continue making defamatory
remarks against him.
Karpal stressed that he had committed no offence and those those who had lodged
reports against him should be prepared to face the consequences of lodging false
reports.
"Clearly what I have raised is a purely legal issue and I have in no way
questioned the prerogative of the Perak Sultan as head of the religion of Islam
in the state as guaranteed in the Federal Constitution," said Karpal.
"It has been, and it is my view that the Perak Sultan had no jurisdiction or
power to direct the state government to reinstate Jamry who was a state
government servant," he said, adding that he failed to see why there has been
such an uproar over what is purely a legal issue that was backed by a Federal
Court judgement and upheld by the Privy Council in London, until 1985 the
highest court in Malaysia.
On another matter, Karpal said his queries in Parliament about who prepared the
King’s speech was in no way an intention to insult the King.
"I raised the matter because if Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting, who was moving the
motion, had said it was the government, I wanted to raise a question on why
Barisan Nasional fared badly in the polls, losing its two thirds majority, and
absence of calls to repeal repressive laws in the speech," he said.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that nine police reports have been lodged
against Karpal so far in connection with this matter.
Sentul OCPD ACP Ahmad Sofian Md Yasin said two reports were lodged each in
Sentul and Brickfields and one each in Dang Wangi, Tapah, Port Dickson, Muar and
Penang.
He said the reports were channelled to the Sentul police headquarters because
the place where Karpal made the statement was within the Sentul police
jurisdiction.
The two reports in Sentul were from Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku
Adnan Tengku Mansor and Malaysia Youth Council secretary-general Tajudin Ahmad.
In Penang, state Umno youth secretary Ramlan Ishak, who lodged the report at the
Jelutong police station, said Karpal's statement had created anxiety among the
people.
Last week, Sultan Azlan Shah ordered Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar
Jamaluddin to retract the 24-hour transfer order issued to Jamry as the transfer
was done without the consent of the Sultan as the head of Islamic religion.
Abdullah.. expedite the case on Karpal
KUALA LUMPUR (May 09, 2008): Prime Minister Datuk Seri
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi expressed hope today for the case against Bukit Gelugor MP
Karpal Singh to be expedited if it was to be brought to the court.
He said it is up to the Attorney-General (AG) to decide on whether there is a
case against him for questioning the decision made by the Sultan of Perak on the
position of the state Islamic Religious Department (Jaip) director.
"We leave it to the AG to decide. If he thinks the case could be brought to
court, I hope it would be done quickly because many people are interested to
know the ruling on this case," he told a press conference after a special
Supreme Council meeting today (Friday).
He said the cabinet meeting earlier today did not discuss the matter although
according to Bernama, nine police reports have been made against Karpal in
connection with his statement on the powers of the Sultan of Perak.
The DAP national chairman was reported as saying that Sultan Azlan Shah had no
jurisdiction over the transfer of Jaip director Datuk Jamry Sury who had been
issued a 24-hour transfer order by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin
on April 29.
Three days later, the Raja Muda Perak, Raja Nazrin Shah, acting on behalf of the
Sultan, had summoned Nizar to the palace and ordered him to reinstate Jamry.
On the report from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the controversial VK
Lingam video clip, Abdullah said he will look into the content before deciding
whether it would be made public or not.
"Let me look at it first to see what it has to say. Now I have not even looked
at it yet, how could you (reporters) ask me to make a decision? I want to see
what is in the content or what is being said and then we will decide.
Asked whether it will be discussed by the cabinet, he said: "I did not say it
will be dicussed. I said I will look at it, read it, scrutinise what is inside
it, then surely cabinet will have to know (first)."
Earlier this morning, after submitting the four volume report to the Yang
di-Pertuan Agong at the Istana Negara, commission chairman Tan Sri Haidar Mohd
Noor said he personally thinks the report on the findings should be made public.
However, he said, it is not for me to decide as the last word is still with the
Prime Minister and the commission did not suggest to the Prime Minister to make
it public.
On another matter, Abdullah said the anti-inflation committee meeting on Monday
will finalise everything related to the government’s plan to tackle the rice
shortage crisis faced by the country due to rising price of food products in the
world market.
Later, after the weekly meeting which he chairs, a statement will be issued to
the press.
On the incident in Bandar Mahkota Cheras last night whereby police were reported
to have doused some 500 residents with water cannons and fired dozens of tear
gas canisters into the crowd, Abdullah said he does not have the details about
it.
"I do not have a detail report. I don’t want to comment. (Home Minister Datuk
Seri Syed) Hamid Albar would have the detail report," he said.
During the melee, Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng was allegedly assaulted by
plainclothes police officers.
The incident occurred shortly after Lim arrived at the scene to lend support to
the residents who had gathered at the Bandar Tun Hussien Onn intersection of the
Kajang-Cheras Highway.

My only wish is that I have at least a drop of the courage that this man possess.
Malaysians sure love making police reports... I suppose, these poor policemen would not have much to do if they are not out escorting some so call VIP or VVIP or is it VIB?
