SLIM RIVER: Barisan Nasional component party leaders must abandon their
sensitivities and take part in joint activities regardless of whether they are
religious in nature, said MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan.
Participating in religious events would not compromise an individual’s personal
beliefs in his or her own religion, he said.
“By attending or even participating in these events, we show our ability to
accept and respect the cultures and religious beliefs of others.
“After all, this is the very foundation that Malaysia was built upon – a
multiracial society,” he said when attending the Tanjung Malim MIC division AGM
here on Wednesday.
Ong, who is Housing and Local Government Minister, also urged all Barisan
grassroots leaders to band together in rejuvenating the coalition by holding
joint activities.
“This is our plan now. When we stand alone as the MCA, Umno or the MIC, we are
communal parties.
“However, when we come together, we become multiracial and this is what the
people want,” he said.
He added that this was the one weakness that the Barisan needed to overcome and
learn from.
“The Opposition played on this in the elections, they made use of this weakness
and the people believed it.
“But now that they have gained power, we can see that they do not have a
concrete plan on how to run the country,” he said.
Ong also encouraged the MIC not to lose hope in regaining the people’s support
for the party had experience and history as its greatest assets.
“Use the assets and improve on them.
“The party is strong because of its background,” he said.
