©The Star (Used by permission) KUANTAN: Anti-Lynas groups are free to voice their dissent through their activities, says Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob. Commenting on the recent protests against the rare earth refinery, he said the groups were welcomed to hold their activities at Taman Gelora every week. “I am very open-minded. I will even join them if they organise activities like jogging or walking at the park,” he said. “They can wear their anti-Lynas T-shirts and I will wear my own.” Thousands of protesters rallied at the park for the Green Solidarity event in early October. And, last weekend, the Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas movement organised a family day at the same venue to protest against the plant. Adnan said the matter was “a non-issue” and was intentionally orchestrated by Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh who wanted to maintain her seat. He said there were safety risks in everyone’s everyday lives. “The best solution would be to manage it,” he said at the Nestlé World Walking Day event here yesterday. “The Atomic Energy Licensing Board, Nuclear Malaysia and other agencies would not have approved the project if it was dangerous. “I, as the Mentri Besar, have read the documents and literature. Why would I harm the people? “If anything happens to the people, who will vote for us?” Adnan asked. He added that those who were afraid of the plant could sell their homes to the state government and it would give them to those who needed it. Some 4,000 participants showed up for the early morning walk around the park organised by Nestlé with the cooperation of the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK). Nestlé said in a press statement that it would contribute RM1 for every kilometre a registered participant walked. “The money will go towards the purchase of 100 wheelchairs for the less fortunate.” Set as favourite Share Email This Comments (0)
