Police back decision to shoot man in gang fight

POLICE have defended their decision to shoot a 26-year-old man while rounding up several suspects allegedly involved in a gang fight near Tasik Permai, Ampang, last Tuesday, citing self-defence.

D. Dinesh, a businessman, died a day later at Ampang Hospital from injuries to the head. Ampang police chief ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin said Dinesh and his friends were aggresive and had lunged at the policemen with machetes.

"The men acted in self-defence. The group was getting out of control, they came charging towards the policemen and my men were forced to open fire," he said.

Amiruddin was responding to certain quarters who had questioned the shooting.

It was reported that police, who were alerted to a gang fight between two rival groups near Tasik Permai, went to the scene and spotted a convoy of six vehicles driving from Ampang Waterfront to Flat 700.

They ordered the group to stop but the warning went unheeded. The patrol cars then blocked one of the vehicles with five men inside, who proceeded to get out and attack the policemen with machetes and iron rods. The policemen fired several shots, one of which hit Dinesh in the head.

Five suspects, including Dinesh, were detained at the scene, and another nine were rounded up the following day.

Amiruddin said nine of them had been sent to Petaling Jaya police headquarters to facilitate investigations there and police have extended the remand order on the earlier four suspects until Tuesday.

Police are also investigating the suspects for their involvement in a house break-in incident where a couple was forced to sleep in their car after intruders broke into their apartment several times.

Dinesh's funeral was held yesterday afternoon. His body was taken from his home in Prima Damansara to his car-wash outlets in Damansara Damai and Sungai Buloh before the burial ceremony was held in Jalan Loke Yew.
