KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said he is prepared to meet any group that wants to discuss public safety issues with him.

He said he had yet to receive word from the organisers of the banned Seksualiti Merdeka event.

It was reported yesterday that the organisers wanted to meet Ismail to explain the movement's objectives.

Its press statement said all public events over the festival had been called off for the safety of participants, and that the organisers were seeking a meeting with Ismail to explain the Seksualiti Merdeka agenda.

“If they want to see me to discuss matters of public safety, then they are welcome,” he said at Bukit Aman during a Hari Raya Aidil Adha ceremony yesterday.

Ismail confirmed that several organisers had been identified and would be brought in to give statements this week.

“We are aware that the event has been called off, but investigations are still being carried out,” Ismail said.

It is learnt that former Bar Council president Datuk S. Ambiga, who was scheduled to attend the launching, would be called in to give her statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code and Section 27A(1)(c) of the Police Act.

Seksualiti Merdeka, an event organised by a coalition of NGOs, artists, activists and individuals, had described itself as “Malaysia's only festival celebrating the human rights of people of diverse sexual orientation”.

The event has been held annually since 2008, and was supposed to host a series of activities to last until Nov 13 at the Annexe Gallery here.
