JOHOR BARU: The burning of incense paper in conjunction with the ongoing Hungry Ghost Festival sparked a war of words which escalated into a brawl between neighbours at a housing estate here.

It was learnt that the drama at Taman Cahaya Masai unfolded around 7.30pm when seven members of a family were burning "hell money" for their ancestors outside the gate of their home.

At the same time, their neighbour next door was having a birthday party.

Heated words were exchanged when one of the family members from the house next door complained that the wind had blown ashes and part of the burnt paper into their compound. An argument followed which later turned into a fist fight.

Several members of the family that was having the party allegedly went into their house and came out armed with hammers and sticks which they used to attack their neighbours.

The fight only broke up when two policemen arrived at the scene.

Injured victims from both families were sent to the Penawar Hospital for treatment.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said seven people had been detained over the incident.
