• Nik Aziz: Dissolve and form single party to unite Malays
IPOH: Pas will neither merge with Umno nor join Barisan Nasional, said its
president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
Giving this assurance at the 13th Pas convention here
yesterday, he pointed out that talks (muqabalah) were held between Umno
and Pas leaders only because Umno had invited Pas, and not vice-versa.
"How can we meet them? It is because the Quran directs us to do so," he said,
citing verses on accepting those who were inclined to make peace.
Earlier in his speech, Abdul Hadi said BN had pressured Pas more than any other
political party. He claimed that villagers had difficulty getting aid, students
who were studying overseas lost their scholarships and civil servants were
transferred for supporting Pas.
He said BN had arranged the meetings to give Pas the opportunity to voice its
concerns and address issues such as abolishing discrimination against states
governed by Pakatan Rakyat.
"This is not our first meeting. We have met BN leaders before
over issues such as Bosnia and Palestine."
Hadi denied the Umno-Pas discussions were dividing Pas members.
Perak Pas commissioner Ahmad Awang said he understood the concerns of Parti
Keadilan Rakyat and DAP over the possibility of Pas merging with Umno to form
the state government.
"I have given them a firm answer and I believe they are satisfied with it. From
the beginning, we have rejected collaborating with Umno to form a state
government when they tried to do so in the first few days after the March 8
general election."
Nik Aziz: Dissolve and form single party to unite Malays
MACHANG: Pas spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has suggested that
Umno and Pas be dissolved and a new party formed to unite all Malays.
However, he said, the new party must be based on Islam and
acceptable to members of both parties.
Nik Aziz, who is Kelantan menteri besar, was commenting on the possible
inclusion of politics in the muqabalah or talks between Umno and Pas.
He insisted that politics should not be discussed in the meetings unless it was
in the context of uniting the Malays in a single party. Nik Aziz said this after
opening the annual meeting of the Kelantan Pas ulama here.
Pas and Kelantan ulama chief Datuk Mohamed Daud said the Malays were in a
critical situation and it had also affected their religion, Islam.
"Disunity among the Malays has put them in a bind and, at the same time, it also
involves Islam. So the discussion between the two parties is important for the
ummah."
He called on Pas leaders to be more receptive to the meetings.
