PETALING JAYA: More than 50 people held a peaceful demonstration here in a move to protect school children from the influence of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Led by Jaringan Melayu Malaysia president Azwanddin Hamzah, the group consisting of members from the parent-teacher associations of four different schools and several NGOs, gathered in front of SK Ampang where they displayed a giant banner and several placards calling for a ban on activities associated with the Seksualiti Merdeka festival.

Earlier this month, police banned Seksualiti Merdeka, which had planned a series of activities in Kuala Lumpur.

Azwanddin said the group had nothing to do with politics.

“Our concern is the future of our children. They are innocent.

“We don't want to be seen as promoting free sex,” he said, highlighting that the group would be using schools as a symbolic location to champion their cause.

He said the group planned to spread awareness against the LGBT community throughout districts in Selangor in months to come.

“It is true that the LGBT community has been active way before the issue caught media attention. But it has never been officially acknowledged until now,” he said.

Belia Bandar Ampang Jaya adviser Mohd Isa, who watched the demonstration with several members, said that from an Islamic standpoint, they were certainly against the LGBT community, but holding a protest was not the way to address the problem.
