“We don’t see any sectors or constituents not agreeing to Ekuinas because the fund has been set up as part of the country’s development,” said Nor Mohamed, who is in charge of the Economic Planning Unit. Speaking to reporters after launching Asia’s first major multi-country Islamic Infrastructure Fund yesterday, he said Ekuinas came under the country’s liberalisation moves. “Bumiputras are not sceptical nor fear to compete in the international arena.” On Tuesday, the Government announced the formation of Ekuinas, a private equity fund with an initial capital of RM500mil, to focus on investing in local companies with high-growth potential. Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said bumiputra women who faced difficulties in obtaining funds for their businesses could seek the wing’s help. A support group – the Women’s Economy Development Secretariat – would help them, she added. “The support group will help facilitate bumiputra women with good business and management potential to get financial aid through bodies like Ekuinas,” she said at a function organised by Wanita Umno to cultivate business links among its members.
