PUTRAJAYA: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad scoffed at the opposition's call to negotiate and fix the next general election date together to avoid dispute over electoral reforms.

Opposition lawmakers made the call saying that since six months had been set aside for a parliamentary select committee to table recommendations to parliament, the government should allow for the reforms to take place prior to announcing the date of the next general election.

"There is no where in the world that the election date is discussed. That is the government's right and the rule applies in other countries," said Dr Mahathir after attending the handing over of eight electric Proton cars to the Prime Minister's Department and four ministries here, yesterday.

Dr Mahathir said if the opposition wanted to decide on such a date, it should first be elected into power.

On the parliamentary select committee, Dr Mahathir said he was confident the government would accept suitable recommendations, although it may have a different view on others.

Last month, the parliamentary select committee on electoral reform was set up to put to rest any suspicion that there was manipulation by the government in the country's electoral process.

The committee comprises government and opposition members.
