KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- The government will fully enforce the Solid
Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) by end of the year, the
Dewan Negara was told today.
Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Hamzah Zainudin said at
the moment, the government was not able to fully enforce the act as several
regulations were still needed to be fine-tuned.
"As of now there is not a single state which has handed over the solid waste and
public cleansing management to the federal government.
"We can only sign the solid waste collection and public cleansing services
agreement when several important regulations are put in place and the Act 672 is
fully enforced," he said.
He was replying to Senator Muhamad Yusof Husin who wanted to know how many
states had agreed to hand over the service to the federal government and the
companies that had been given the contract.
"State governments which refuse to hand over the solid waste management to the
federal government will have to take over the waste disposal management in their
respective state," he said.
Hamzah said the move to take over the solid waste disposal and public cleansing
management from state governments was to standardise the service nationwide.
Replying to Senator Hiang A Li on the country's recycling programme, Hamzah said
so far it only achieved 5 per cent of its objective.
The government has set a target of achieving 22 per cent of the objectives by
2020, he added.
"We want the programme to continue until the people understand why we need to
recycle," he said.
