KUANTAN: The number of evacuees jumped overnight to 2,514 from 246 Saturday as the flood situation continued to worsen in Pahang.

A spokesman of the Pahang police flood operations room said Kuantan district had the highest number of evacuees at 1,386 while 919 people had been evacuated in the Pekan district, 128 in Maran, 48 in Raub and 33 in Cameron Highlands.

He said 26 relief centres had been opened in the state, 13 of them in Kuantan district, four each in Raub and Maran, three in Pekan and two in Cameron Highlands.

Affected areas in the Kuantan district are Sungai Lembing, Panching, Jaya Gading, Kampung Pahang, Cendering, Kampung Jawa, Taman Tas and Gambang.

Those in Pekan include Kampung Cenderawasih, Kampung Padang Rumbia, Kampung Penadah, Kampung Padang and Seri Setia while those in Raub are Batu Talam, Cheroh and Pamah Kulat.

The affected areas in Maran include Sungai Ketam, Luit and Ulu Luit while that in Cameron Highlands is the Bertam Valley near Ringlet.

The spokesman said several roads had been closed due to the floods. They include the stretch of Jalan Sungai Lembing-Kuantan from KM8 to KM12; Jalan Pekan-Nenasi from KM19 to KM24; and Jalan Rompin-Nenasi from KM19 to KM24.

He also said that two landslides occurred in Cameron Highlands, at the 49th mile of Jalan Kampung Terla-Kampung Raja and Jalan Kampung Terla-Brinchang, Saturday but the debris had been cleared up and the stretches of road reopened to traffic.

In PASIR PUTEH, 18 of the 29 flood evacuees returned to their homes Sunday morning as the floods which hit their villages receded.

Pasir Puteh Fire & Rescue officer-in-charge Kaharuddin Yahya said they were from Kampung Wakaf Bunut, Kampung Surau and Chenggal Batu. They had stayed with relatives overnight.

“Only 11 evacuees from Gong Ara are at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Nara relief centre and they are expected to return to their homes later today as the weather has improved,” he said on Sunday.

He also said that the roads closed on Saturdsay -- Jalan Pasir Puteh-Kota Baharu in Kampung Bukit Abal Tiga and Jalan Pasir Puteh-Machang in Kampung Chenggal Pulas -- had been reopened to traffic.
